Evanescence's Amy Lee: "It's Not All Sad"
The singer chats with SPIN.com about her band's infighting, a new solo album, scoring films, and more.

Evanescence's Amy LeeWith Nightmare Revisited, Evanescence's Amy Lee has released her first new material since her band's 2006 multi-platinum hit, The Open Door. Add that to the departure of two Evanescence members and Lee's ever-growing musical independence, and the songstress has some explaining to do.

Lee, who is busy writing new material, talks with SPIN.com about the messy split of Evanescence's guitarist John LeCompt and drummer Rocky Gray, writing a solo album, scoring films, and "Sally's Song," her contribution to Nightmare Revisited, the new collection of covers from Tim Burton's 1993 film, The Nightmare Before Christmas.

On the state of Evanescence:
"It's a difficult situation, as is every dramatic situation our band has gone through. John [LeCompt, guitar], Rocky [Gray, drums] -- we outgrew each other. When they joined the band, Fallen was just completed and they were excited to be a part of something really big. From the beginning, their musical styles were very different from Evanescence. I think to a degree they got bored or frustrated. They weren't part of the creative process and were like, 'Why are we doing this?' Their writing just didn't work for Evanescence, and I have to do what's best for the band. I've had a little bit of contact with John since and it was positive. Very few bands have been able to maintain their original members forever."

On new songs and a solo album:
"I need to show that I’m more than a one trick pony. I'm writing here at the house by myself and it's been really good. But I'd really like to do something different next. [The new songs] are definitely different. I feel like I'm going back to my really old roots. They have more of my folky and Celtic influence than ever before. And it's not all sad -- it's nothing I would categorize as Evanescence."

On scoring films:
"My biggest dream from the beginning -- besides Evanescence -- is scoring film and writing music for film. And I've definitely had that in my head and have been trying to connect with the right people to get involved with the right project. I really feel like it would be great to get into a project that's bigger than myself and be the creator and not necessarily just the performer."

On Nightmare Revisited:
"The Nightmare Before Christmas is my number one biggest influence artistically in every way. [When I was young] I literally would sit in my bedroom and sing 'Sally's Song,' or in the car driving to school. The best part about it [recording the song] was that I had no restrictions or direction or anything. I picked the producer, who's a friend, and we just made the song however we wanted together. [We recorded the song] three months ago, in Fort Worth, TX."

^Εγω παλι αυτο δεν το καταλαβα...Τι εννοει? Τι εννοει "folky and Celtic Influence"? Λαϊκη και Κελτικη επιρροη? Δεν βγαζω νοημα.....
Παντως αν εννοει οτι θα επιστρεψει στο παλιο στυλ τραγουδιων οπως του Fallen....τοτε το μελλον μου φαινεται ευοιωνο....

Υ.Γ. Δε με πειραζει ενα σολο αλμπουμ....Αρκει να ειναι καλο...Το κλασσικο ειδος μουσικης που γραφει η Amy...

Στο Fallen ομως συμμετειχε κι ο Ben....Αρα, μαλλον δε θα εννοει αυτο...Δε ξερω...

Εγω ηξερα οτι μαθαινει αρπα και οτι θα τη χρησιμοποιουσε στο νεο αλμπουμ..Αρα, να υποθεσουμε οτι θα κινειται σε αυτα τα μουσικα πλαισια;

Σιγα μην γραψει και οπερα! (Καλη ιδεα βεβαια γιατι μου αρεσει πολυ...) Αλλα δεν ειναι του στυλ της....Ακου αρπα...! Οι Evanescence υποτιθεται οτι ειναι ροκ συγκροτημα....Αυτη ηταν που ελεγε οτι ζει για τα ροκ τραγουδια....

Μπορει να ειναι ροκ η μουσικη και να προσθεσει στην ενορχηστρωση αρπα...τι να πω....Εχω απηυδησει ολιγον με τα τελευταια....

Πάνο, γιατί σου φαίνεται τόσο παράξενη η άρπα; Στο Sally's song παίζει άρπα και έπαιξε στην ζωντανή εκτέλεση..

Όσο για το πόσο πίσω μιλάει εμένα μου φαίνεται ότι δεν αναφέρεται όχι στο Fallen, αλλά ούτε καν στο Origin.. Και μάλιστα λέει "it's nothing I would categorize as Evanescence" ..

Τον Ben εγώ πάλι δεν θα τον ήθελα πίσω.. Αλλά το Bring Ben Back μου φέρνει στο αντίθετο του Bye Bye Beautiful..

Σοβαρα μιλας?????????? Ο Ben Moody ηταν αυτος που διαμορφωσε το στυλ των Evanescence! Αυτος ηταν ο βασικος! Αυτος εγραφε την περισσοτερη μουσικη! Η Lee εγραφε κυριως στιχους....Το My Immortal γραφτηκε αποκλειστικα απο αυτον! H Amy προσθεσε μονο τη γεφυρα, το κομματι μετα το δευτερο ρεφραιν....Και η συμβολη του Moody φανηκε μολις αποχωρησε....Τα εχουμε πει αυτα αλλωστε...Οι Evanescence απετυχαν να κανουν την ιδια επιτχια! Το TOD πουλησε 10.000.000 λιγοτερα απο το Fallen, και απετυχε να παρει εστω κι ενα Grammy, ενω το Fallen κερδισε 2 !!!

Ο Moody ηταν Ο,ΤΙ ΚΑΛΥΤΕΡΟ για τους Ev. ! Δεν μπορει να μην τον θελεις πισω!!!
Βλεπεις τι προσπαθει να κανει η Lee, σε ποια μουσικα μονοπατια προσπαθει να βαδισει....Εχει ξεφυγει εντελως! Αν ηταν ο Moody, τωρα θα ειχαμε αλλο ενα "Fallen" στη θεση του TOD και θα αναμεναμε ακομα ενα!

Υ.Γ. Ακομα πιο πριν και απο το Origin???? Αφου δεν ειχε γραψει τπτ πριν απο αυτο! Ποσο πιο πισω???Οταν ηταν 14???Τα τραγουδια του Origin γραφτηκαν τα πεισσοτερα μολις τελειωσε το σχολειο....

Κι εγω απο μουσικης αποψης εννοω οτι τον θελω πισω. Ενταξει, μπορει να μην ειναι ο καλυτερος χαρακτηρας. για την ακριβεια μπορει να ειναι πολυ προβληματικος. Αλλα σαν μουσικος, δε το συζητω!

Μη με φας βρε Πάνο, αλλά όχι δεν τον θέλω πίσω..

Δεν με νοιάζει πόσο πούλησε το TOD και πόσο το Fallen, γτ δεν τα μετράω όλα σε αριθμούς.. Εμένα οι μελωδίες του TOD μ' άρεσαν περισσότερο και γενικά ως σύνολο το προτιμώ όσο κι αν λάτρεψα την προηγούμενη δουλειά τους. Ναι το My immortal νομίζω είναι η 1η δουλειά του Ben και το Give unto me αντίστοιχα της Amy.. Και το Bring me to life αντίστοιχα τεράστια επιτυχία του MI είναι δουλειά της Amy.
Δεν μ' αρέσουν αυτά που ακούω για τη μελλοντική πορεία της των Ev, έχω επιφυλάξεις, αλλά κρίνοντας απ' το τι έχω προς στιγμήν απ' την Amy με και χωρίς τον Ben εγώ την προτιμώ έτσι.

^Ναι, μόνο ως μουσικός είναι υπό συζήτηση το θέμα νομίζω.. Αλλά και από αυτή την άποψη εγώ δεν θα τον ήθελα..

Δε σε τρωω!

Εγω ομως που τα μετραω σε αριθμους το αποτελεσμα ειναι ζημια και οχι κερδος ..... Αρα αρνητικο αποτελεσμα, αρα ο Ben πρεπει να ερθει πισω για να ανεβουν οι πωλησεις ξανα και οι Ev να επανελθουν δρυμητεροι και να φτασουν αλλη μια φορα στην κορυφη...

Παντως κι εγω εχω πολλες επιφυλαξεις για το μελλον των Ev...Απο τοτε που ακουσα φημες για σολο καριερα της Amy...............................................
Δεν τα βλεπω καλα τα πραγματα.....Πανε για διαλυση...

Α, οκ, γιατί προς στιγμήν φοβήθηκα, επειδή δεν τρώγομαι ούτε ωμή, ούτε ψημένη.

Κοίταξε οι πωλήσεις δείχνουν ποσότητα και όχι απαραίτητα ποιότητα. Ναι, έκαναν μεγαλύτερη επιτυχία, αλλά κατ' εμέ αυτό οφείλεται και στην πολύ μεγαλύτερη προώθηση που είχαν αφενός και στα κομμάτια που είχαν περισσότερο την υποδομή για να γίνουν hit. Επαναλαμβάνω όμως, ότι το TOD μ' αρέσει περισσότερο συνολικά.. Οπότε όχι, πλέον δεν αναπολώ την περίοδο του Ben και όχι δεν θα ήθελα με τίποτα να είχαμε άλλο ένα Fallen όπως είπες στην θέση του TOD.. Δεν θέλω να πιάσουν όσο δυνατόν υψηλότερες θέσεις στα charts, θέλω να μ' αρέσει όσο δυνατόν περισσότερο η δουλειά τους.. Αυτό που δεν μ' αρέσει σ' αυτά που ακούω είναι ότι "it's nothing I would categorize as Evanescence"..γι' αυτό και λέω πριν το Origin. Το Origin είναι Evanescence.

Συμφωνω απολυτα....Το Origin ειναι Evanescence...Το ιδιο και το Fallen...Οχι ομως και το The Open Door....Ολοι μας παρατηρησαμε μια τεραστια διαφορα στον ηχο του καινουργιου αλμπουμ σε σχεση με το Fallen....Και αυτη η διαφορα φανηκε (κατα τη δικη μου ταπεινη γνωμη) μονο στα τραγουδια που η Lee εγραψε μαζι με τον Terry Balsamo....Ενω το Lithium, το Like You και το Good Enough που τα εγραψε, μουσικη και στιχους, αποκλειστικα η Lee εχουν περισσοτερο στοιχεια απο τον παλιο ηχο....Πιστευω οτι θα μπορουσαν να ειναι ανετα στο Fallen....Ειδικα το Lithium....μου θυμιζει πολυ το My Last Breath και το My Immortal σαν στυλ ηχου.....

Αυτοι ειναι οι Evanescence και αυτοι οι τρεις διαμορφωσαν τον ηχο του συγκροτηματος, αυτον που εμεις τωρα χαρακτηριζουμε ως Evanescence....


Υ.Γ.Τον Terry Balsamo τον παω πολυ σαν κιθαριστα και σαν ανθρωπο, αλλα η μουσικη που γραφει δε μου αρεσει....Ειναι πολυ .... rock και καθολου Evanescence....

Εγώ διαφωνώ. Θεωρώ ότι ο ήχος ενός συγκροτήματος δεν μπορεί να μένει στάσιμος.. Οι άνθρωποι ωριμάζουν και το ίδιο και η μουσική που γράφουν. Και επίσης μ' αρέσει πολύ η μουσική του Terry.
Έχουν αλλάξει οι καταστάσεις στη ζωή τους και είναι φυσικό επόμενο να υπάρχουν αλλαγές. Καταρχήν ρε Πάνο η Amy είναι ερωτευμένη, πόσο στο στυλ του Fallen θα μπορούσαν π.χ. να είναι οι στίχοι;

"The band has suffered several line-up changes, including co-founder Moody leaving mid-tour in 2003, bassist Will Boyd in mid-2006, followed by guitarist John LeCompt and drummer Rocky Gray in 2007. The later two of the changes ultimately led the band to be on hiatus with only temporary replacements sought in order for the band to finish touring."

"Hiatus" για οσους δεν ξερουν ειναι η προσωρινη παυση λειτουργιας .....Για ενα συγκροτημα δηλαδη αυτο σημαινει οχι αλλες συναυλιες, οχι μελλοντικα σχεδια για καινουργια αλμπουμ, κλπ.......

Κριμα......τους βλεπω να διαλυονται....
Και η Amy Lee συνεχεια πεταει σποντες για solo καριερα.....Οτι γραφει τραγουδια αλλα δεν ξερει αν προοριζονται για δικο της αλμπουμ η για τους Evanescence, λεει οτι θα της αρεσε να γραψει μουσικη για ταινιες (δηλ.soudtracks), κλπ.....

Dear Evanescence,

I have spent a great deal of time researching you and have established that you are an emo quasi-Christian alt-rock band with a lush overproduced sound and a fondness for minor keys.

Part of this I learned from Wikipedia and part of this I learned from my next door neighbour playing your songs at full volume over and over and over again - often also singing along. I am by nature a shy and unconfrontational person and having moved to the area only recently I am reluctant to risk offending them by asking them to turn their music off before I start cutting off my own ears. Instead I am seeking to take a more holistic approach in an effort to reach a long-term solution. For this reason I am writing to you to humbly ask: Could you please not release any more music ever again?

In an interview with The Gauntlet on October 23, 2008, Lee stated that she did not know whether or not she would begin a solo career, saying that she was "at a point where I don't know what is next." She noted that Evanescence guitarist Terry Balsamo and bassist Tim McCord are still with the band, but that she found touring to be monotonous. She reiterated that she was currently writing songs, just that she did not know for what purpose they would serve.

In front of a shining black Baldwin piano, Amy Lee of Evanescence made her first real performance in over a year…and it was a good one. On February 23, 2009, the hauntingly beautiful singer/songwriter could be found at a taping of Legends and Lyrics in Nashville, Tennessee, sharing the stage with artists Gavin DeGraw and Dwight Yoakam.

Though out of her element in an ''in the round" session, she quickly made herself comfortable at the piano, performing an acoustic set with guitar (cue Terry Balsamo of Evanescence) and cello. The trio can only be described as raw, ethereal, and haunting.

Lee, the first of the artists to perform, began with Bring Me To Life from the album Fallen, setting the bar for the program. Before delving into Lithium, from album The Open Door, Amy felt the need to clarify the meaning of the song. Speculating that there were likely many interpretations, she explained simply that the song was about choosing to feel over choosing numbness. Good Enough, also from album The Open Door, was described by Lee as the “happy song” of the evening. Before Call Me When You’re Sober, again from The Open Door, she went on to explain how the song was created from two very different pieces, one from her, one from Terry.

For Amy’s final song of the evening, it was a surprise and an honor to be privy to her new song, one that had not yet been performed for a public audience. From the first few notes and syllables uttered, Lee held the crowd, including Gavin DeGraw and Dwight Yoakam, in the palm of her hand. The piece, entitled Your Love, was described as being about love that cannot work. It took a few moments for the spell to wear off once the song was over.

There are artists whose live performances fall short, that disappoint. Amy Lee is not one of those
artists. Her emotions run deep and when she bares herself to her audience, it’s difficult not to take notice; you cannot just hear her words, you feel them as well.

These sessions of Legends and Lyrics are expected to begin airing in April 2009. Mark your calendars, you won’t want to miss this one.
